How can you model the TD approach by structuring the experience of the
participants?
Adult learning benefits greatly from varying teaching methods. Moreover, the training itself should model the practice of
transdisciplinarity for coherence of contents and delivery. Thus, here we offer general methods that are time-tested and
can be applied to the teaching and integration of new content or new skills. Although they are not exclusively designed for
transdisciplinary training, they are consistent with the TD approach. In fact, the attributes of TDR, reflected in the guiding
questions below, provide criteria for the selection of the methods. Overall, aim for participants to engage in a learn-by-doing
approach.
How can you make the training as
salient as possible to participants?
The training will be as relevant and useful to
participants as possible, if they can learn TD concepts
and skills in the contexts in which they are most likely
to apply them. Thus, inquiring before the training what
those research, cultural, political-economic, and
sectoral contexts are will help you select appropriate
examples, case studies, audio and video clips, and
background readings. Understanding those contexts
may also help you select among possible content
choices, or focus on practicing particular skills because
they will be needed in those contexts.
